Flagstaff selects reliever Smith to highlight 2019 Draft

Thanks to a bit of a spending spree in the Auction, the Flagstaff Outlaws didn’t pick until the 16th Round of the 2019 Free Agent Draft, with each pick valued at 1M. With that pick, the Outlaws chose Joe Smith, relief pitcher.

“With our draft board decimated at this point, we felt fortunate to land a reliever of Smith’s quality at this spot,” Outlaws GM Greg Newgard said. “We hope to be able to continue to find nuggets like this in these last few spots.”

In Round 21, Flagstaff filled their hole at third, select Eduardo Nunez to station that position.

“Nunez gives us flexibility to play some second and third and probably ends up shifting Joe Panik to the bench,” Newgard reflected. “We can move some guys around where needed, but we feel happy with Jonathan Villar at second, Andrleton Simmons at short and now Nunez at third for most of the time.”

In the 100K round, Flagstaff selected OF Jordan Luplow, IF Chris Owings, and P Nick Tropeano.

“Luplow and Tropeano are signings for youth, getting a young bat and arm,” Newgard said. “Owings was part of a trade that will net us another young arm.”
